Chandra Lynn has nominated me for this challenge.
The rules are::
- Thank the person who nominates you
- Post one quote per day for 3 consecutive days
- Nominate three new bloggers each day (sorry – I am only doing one as more would stress me out too much)
Β
Quote:
Everybody knows that the dice are loaded
Everybody rolls with their fingers crossed
Everybody knows the war is over
Everybody knows the good guys lost
Everybody knows the fight was fixed
The poor stay poor, the rich get rich
That’s how it goes
Everybody knows
Everybody rolls with their fingers crossed
Everybody knows the war is over
Everybody knows the good guys lost
Everybody knows the fight was fixed
The poor stay poor, the rich get rich
That’s how it goes
Everybody knows
Everybody knows that the boat is leaking
Everybody knows that the captain lied
Everybody got this broken feeling
Like their father or their dog just died
Everybody talking to their pockets
Everybody wants a box of chocolates
And a long-stem rose
Everybody knows
Everybody knows that the captain lied
Everybody got this broken feeling
Like their father or their dog just died
Everybody talking to their pockets
Everybody wants a box of chocolates
And a long-stem rose
Everybody knows
Leonard Cohen ‘Everybody Knows’
Leonard Cohen was someone who I only grew to truly appreciate in recent years, though this was the first song of is that I became aware of many years earlier (in Atom Egoyan’s 1994 movie ‘Exotica’). Cohen’s lyrics are masterful and the above song reflects how many people in the UK and US (and elsewhere) feel at the moment.
There is only one person I can nominate in a post with words by a Montreal legend – another marvelous native of Montreal. Dominique Nancy of 3C Style.
I really discovered him quite late too, letβs say early thirties and fall in love

A recent discovery for me as well. Definitely crafty with his words as I am a fan. There are a few lines in there that definitely hit home. Hugs! πππ±

I remember hearing a Leonard Cohen song years ago and thinking that it was very depressing but, as an angst ridden teenager he was a great discovery ;O)

Funny. I think it varies with personality. I found a post this morning that suggests INFPs like me are drawn to sad things because in some ways we find them uplifting. My wife is like you and finds Cohen depressing.

I’m kind of in between. There are times when I will actively seek out depressing music (especially) or films because……bugger I’m not actually sure why…because it matches my mood at the time I suppose.
When you say uplifted, do you mean that sad songs will actually lift your mood?

Yes they do. I know I’m weird…
And it isn’t just lyrics either. Pop songs tend to be in major keys which sound upbeat. I am drawn to tunes in minor keys. Minor keys often have a melancholy sound even if the actual words of the song are not depressing. A good example would be REMs ‘ World Leader Pretend’.

No not weird at all :O) OK I think I get it now – if I’m doing something I like upbeat music for the energy but if I’m sitting and listening to music I prefer the minor keys – your example really helped me understand that – great example by the way :O) It’s almost as if this type of music is deeper somehow if that makes sense.

I also discovered him quite late – but better late than never. π This is one great song and I can’t wait to see what you’ve chosen for day 2 of the challenge! π

Hi Darren! I love that you shared a quote from a song. I haven’t heard this song before but I am listening to it now. Very thoughtful lyrics π

I am so pleased to have introduced you to this song Sophie! I could have chosen several others of his. He started out as a poet and you can tell.

Yes it is a poetic song. I love songs like this one that makes you think π

I gotta add to this. I love this song! I love that you used it as a quote!

Mel my friend, thank you so much for adding the videoπ. The word ‘genius’ is overused but I believe all 3 of my quotes are from those deserving of the description. You can tell that Cohen was a poet first and foremost.

Oh Darren, thanks so much for your kind words and the nomination. You already know how much I love Leonard Cohen. You have chosen one of my favorite song from this ‘genius’ artist. It is not as popular as ‘A Thousand Kisses Deep’ or ‘The Land of Plenty’ which I could listen all day long but this song has a special meaning to me. That you chose this song in particular surprises me a little, but after all we have so much in common that I should not be so surprised. I will do the challenge as soon as possible my friend. Thanks again.

Welcome back my lovely Dominique π
No rush. I know how busy you are.
I am so pleased to have chosen a song with special meaning for you. As you say, we do share a lot, so it is not so surprising I guess.
It is one of my favourites too.
I think Hallelujah is probably his best known song here because of the Jeff Buckley cover, but it is not among my favourites. X

To be honest, I like all of Cohen’s songs. Some of his songs may leave a depressing feeling when listening repetitively, but usually his music, his lyrics and his voice carry me to a magical place where creativity is at the ‘rendez-vous’. xoxo
