Awesome Blogger Award

img_0323

The beautiful Rhapsody Boheme has nominated me for this award. I am very moved by this as I am really fond of her, so this award means a lot to me as did the lovely things she said about me in the nomination. She has her battles, not least with chronic illness. Despite these battles she has a glowing, loving and positive outlook and has the kind of freedom of spirit and inner beauty that I am in awe of. She is a very talented artist, writer and photographer too. And, of course, custodian of Luna, the worlds feistiest Guinea Pig. Thank you beautiful friend for nominating me, you enrich my life.

Rules For This Award:

  • Thank the person who nominated you.
  • Include the reason behind the award.
  • Tag it under #awesomebloggeraward in the Reader.
  • Answer the questions your nominator gave you.
  • Nominate at least 5 awesome bloggers.
  • Give your nominees 10 new questions to answer.
  • Let your nominees know that they’ve been nominated.

Rhapsody Boheme’s questions:

What was your biggest accomplishment in life?

Tough one this. Careerwise probably being co-author on a Science paper this year that helped persuade the UK environment minister to support a ban on Neonicotinoid pesticides.

In my personal life achieving a distinction in my botanical art diploma meant a lot to me but as far as me as a person is concerned then probably overcoming early adversity to become an at least half-decent human being.

What would you do different if you had to do it again?

Truth? I would have not settled down so young and would have spread my wings a little first. But this is not something to speculate about really as all experiences, good and bad, have shaped who I am. I would not be blogging or met my lovely WP friends if it had not been for the threads of previous experiences leading to this moment.

What is your favorite past time?

Either the golden age of botanical discovery in the late 18th and early 19th century or the 1960s because the music was great😀

What is your definition of happiness?

Feeling loved. Though eating Indian food is a close second!

What is your favorite season and why?

Spring because of the sense of renewal and possibility.

What quality do you love about yourself?

I’ve answered this question in a previous award post.  I do like my sense of humour and I try to be kind and patient. (Not sure I love anything about myself but I know I will get scolded for saying this! I’m working on it – OK?)

Optimist or Pessimist?

Optimist, which might surprise some people.

What was your biggest lesson learned so far?

Others see qualities in me that I do not see easily myself. To be negative about myself is to disregard their opinions. I am still learning this lesson.

What is your dream job and why?

As the job of Penelope Cruz’s lover is probably not available I would say that I would like to work from home as an artist and maybe sell some plants too.

What is your best advice for new bloggers?

Follow and visit other blogs and leave comments. Use the WP search facility to find other people who blog about things that interest you. Do not be scared. I love the friends I have made via WP.

My nominations are, really anyone that wants to participate😀. Also please do not feel any obligation if nominated.

Ortensia Writes in such a beautiful and quirky way about her life and family and her posts are a joy to read.

Jen Shares my love of the natural world and is a talented photographer. She is also very kind and inspirational.

Chandra Lynn is a teacher, photographer, writer and champion of the arts and is a very inspiring and positive person too.

Collettebytes has powerful things to say about the state of our world. Sometimes these can be uncomfortable truths. Her compassion shines through in her writing. The link goes to a post with some disturbing images.

Martina has been one of my nominees before so I hope she will forgive me for doing this to her again. Martina is a lovely, kind and inspiring meditation teacher and I feel I have learned a lot through following her.

I simply cannot do this particular award without mentioning Dominique. As a science journalist by profession she has a unique voice among the myriad style and fashion blogs out there. She is also kind, positive, inspiring and much funnier than she thinks she is!

Questions for my nominees:

1. Would you ever trust any politician enough to buy a used car from them?

2. Toast: Jam, Honey, or Marmalade on it?

3. TV. Cheers or Frazier?

4. What is your earliest memory?

5. Are you a cold weather or warm weather person?

6. What book are you currently reading?

7. Why do you think compassion is seen as weakness by so many people?

8. Your favourite movie director? And favourite movies of theirs?

  3. Great post Darren…amazing to have been influental in the survival of bees and as a result our planet! Also amazing awareness and personal growth when you say…”Others see qualities in me that I do not see easily myself. To be negative about myself is to disregard their opinions. I am still learning this lesson”…I might use this quote in class with your permission?

  4. Aw, Darren, you are too kind, I am honored you would list me! But enough about me, wow….I am so impressed with your paper having a direct impact on the UK to stop using certain pesticides…way to go!!!! I’d love to ban them all and a few other toxic things…but I won’t get going on that;) Thank you dear friend:)

    1. You are very welcome Jen. One day I will tell the full story about the neonics project. We had a new paper out only two weeks ago too, about our finding neonics in honey. The work has resulted in massive investment in my lab, which is nice but daunting!

      Liked by 3 people

        1. Even with organic in the uk we should be careful. Bees will travel a fair distance to feed on treated crops rather thsn wildflowers nearby. Evidence that neonics are addictive just like the nicotine they are derived from and bees get hooked on them even to their own detriment.

  5. Thank you my dear friend. To be nominated for this award is awesome, especially by you. YOU inspire me daily with awe. I am very grateful for your kind words and that you thought of me, but mostly I am appreciative of your amazing friendship. You are as sweet as honey, but without thankfully neonicotinoids pesticides. I find it funny that you mention this study of yours in this post as it is what brought you to my path. xoxo

    1. Dominique, how could I exclude you? I was, of course, thinking about how we first met when I wrote that part of the post. The neonics project was stressful but that it resulted in our friendship makes all that stress worthwhile. 😍😀

  6. You certainly deserve the award Darren. Congratulations. I am particularly impressed that you helped to persuade the government to keep the ban on Neonicotinoid pesticides. That is truly awsome.

Also, thank you for nominating me. That is very kind of you. I am flattered. I am even tempted to pass it on, except as a rule I don’t take part in them. I am a rather lazy blogger…just now and again when I think that I have a powerful enough message that I want to get out of my system.
It is also difficult to construct blogs on my Android phone… I don’t have a computer, or even a working ‘tablet,’ to use as I am constantly travelling and either on free hotel WiFi or on rather pricey mobile data. I do read lots of blogs and really appreciate yours because you paint lovely botanical art, post fascinating photos of exotic plants, and generally have amusing things to say about the state of things in your world. For that, I thank you. It is always nice to drop in now and again.

As far as your ‘toast’ question… I can’t resist answering that.
“It would have to be gluten free toast and I’d choose Seville Marmalade…sweet with just a touch of bitterness. But in truth, I eat neither. I eat whole food plant based as much as possible. As a vegan, I don’t eat honey on principle. While it is a ‘wonder food,’ after I read that commercial bee keepers no longer follow the rule of taking only 50% of the honey from a hive, and instead, take 90-100%, replacing it with high fructose corn syrup (HFCS), I decided that it was cruel. Bees need their food source. HFCS leaves them weak and vulnerable to disease. It is a terrible practice and one that has awful consequences for our bee populations.

Anyway, do revel in your award. You totally deserve it!😊

    1. Thank you Collette. We just published another paper about our finding neonics in honey actually…..
I often wondered why vegans were against honey. Where my wife works they have two hives and do not follow the hfcs thing. I can also confirm the honey is pesticide free because I used it for a ‘blank’ when doing the neonics work😄

    Marmalade

    3. TV. Cheers or Frazier?

    Frazier

    4. What is your earliest memory?

Six months old…my sister losing all her sweeties out of the bottom of a ‘penny worth’ paper bag. (Shows how old I am😋).

    5. Are you a cold weather or warm weather person?

    Warm

    6. What book are you currently reading?

‘Of Patchwork Warriors’ by fellow blogger, http://heroicallybadwriters.com/

  8. I’ve stared and stared at your beautiful words and praise for me and I’m in awe. You moved me to tears and I can’t find the proper words to express my gratitude and all the emotions that have flooded me. 1. Actually the timing was quite deliberate as I felt you needed to read that. I actually wrote it during the Christmas break and had it scheduled for next week but moved it forward for you. You moved me to tears with your words when you nominated me and I will never forget what you wrote. Thinking of you my friend, at this difficult time. Dx ❤😄

  9. Reblogged this on Rhapsody Bohème and commented:
I couldn’t help but reblog Darren’s response to the awesomene Blogger Award. I cherish his answers and the chance he has given us to get to know him a little more, but his kind words and beautiful comments in regards to me have moved me to tears and immense gratefulness. He has even gone so far as to move his post up for me because he felt that i needed to hear what he had written. Darren knows that the last couple of days have been tough for me, with the news about my Mom, which makes me struggle from time to time. To have someone take notice of that and put their own troubles aside to help another is no small feat and it takes a special person. Darren is such a person, changing his prior planned agenda for his award post, simply because he thought that it could brighten my day.
His words are treasures, and they do arrive in a time when I myself feel vulnerable and needed a random act of kindness. I could never put into words the appreciation and love this made me feel and I’m forever thankful.
I’m reblogging Darren’s post because he has touched my heart and because people like him a rare and one of a kind. He has a heart of gold and I feel more people have to discover the beauty of his blog and all the kindness he brings to the WordPress community.
So please stop by and say hello if you haven’t already and meet one of the most kind human beings I have ever met. Much love to you my friend and thank you for doing this for me. It has made my day and you always make a difference. Hugs 💙

  10. Hiya..I wandered over here after rhapsodyBoheme wrote such beautiful words about you. I came to see if she was correct in her thinking….yes she was…and is. You have a beautiful soul.
As far as that job is concerned? Could you consider taking on Ted Cruz instead of Penelope? He is in desperate need for some lovin’….or possibly Vladimir Cruz? no? well, it was worth a shot, and granted the pay stinks.

    1. Oh wow, hello and thank you. I am humbled. Have a welcoming hug please. 😊💕

I will pop over and visit you too in a little while.

Sorry, don’t fancy either of those two. Maybe if they wore a long dark wig and I was very drunk and was given a promise of a big financial incentive I might consider it…😉

      Liked by 3 people

      1. well, wigs aside it would have to be the financial incentive….w have 1.37 at this time saved for such activities…….maybe we should discuss this further once the funding is approved. I have sent a zillion emails requesting 100 from the recipient for them to receive moneys from a small African country whose prince is recently deceased and left them bazillions……….i’m hoping it works! :\
